CHEMICAL FAT

 

LIPIDS: Triglycerides provide energy during aerobic metabolism, they are stored in the adipose (fat) tissues beneath the skin, within skeletal muscles and around the organs. Cholesterol provides structure for steroid hormones, such as estrogen and androgen, cell membranes, and bile acids. Within cells, lipids regulate fluid balance between the cell and its external fluid environment. Fats in the body cushion  organs from shock and blunt trauma and stores energy for future use.  Triglycerides are an efficient form of energy storage that can be mobilized when fuel is needed, a small amount of lipids can store a large amount of energy. Lipids are long term energy storage unlike carbs which are for short term usage, Lipid hormones, like steroids and eicosanoids, mediate communication between cells. The fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are required for metabolism, usually as coenzymes. Fats can either be Saturated or Unsaturated.

We learnt before that the Krebs’ Cycle produced;

• 10 NADH molecules 
• 2 FADH2 molecules

In this video he discussed the fate of these molecules when they entered the ETC.He stated that the electrons from FADH2 has a lower energy level than those from NADH hence NADH when entered into the ETC generates more ATP moelcules than FADH2. The main basis of this process is so that the electrons from the NADH and the FADH2 molecules can enter the inner membrane via an enzyme. The electrons then passes through various molecules which result in them going ‘downhill’ losing energy. Atp is generated and the H+ lost from the NADH and FADH2 forms water with the oxygen present.

He gave a really good description of the process but left out the key terms and most of the times by-passed relative information.

The picture above gives the direction of the NADH being reduced to NAD+ also the direction of the FADH2 being reduced to FAD. ATPase is the enzyme which synthesizes the ATP reaction within the mitochondia. The basis by whih the H+ ions are pumped into the empty lumen space of the membrane is called Chemosmosis. In the video he briefly explained these key points but overall the video was a good one to learn from.

WHAT ARE YOU MADE OF?? (NUCLEIC ACIDS) 

Judging by the way we look we all have different characteristics or Genetic make up. We know that the mode of hereditary is through the chromosomes that contain different genes on them. These Genes contains our DNA(Deoxyribonucleic   Acid). This is what determines the way we look, things we do,our personality etc.

Now DNA is made up of;

• A ribose sugar
• Bases (Purine and Pyrimidine)
• A phosphate Group

DNA is a double helix structure.You remember when we did Proteins???? Right So you must be saying to yourself that DNA is transcripted to RNA then translated into protein, for example, in a paternity test the bud (or hair root) contains your DNA which is usually tested to determine relations between two individuals.

When the bases are paired it is always a Purine to a Pyrimidine, never 2 Purines or 2 Pyrimidine being paired.

You  are just some Ribosome I used to know, Gah!
On to the Cell. Any idea about the size of Ribosomes in Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells? You prolly already knew that the size of Ribosome for Prokaryotic cells are slightly smaller than those of Eukaryotic; 70S and 80S repectively. Non-SI Unit "S" represents the Svedberg unit but what does that really represent? How 'bout SUCKER?@! Now what's a Ribosome? These are comples molecular structures that serve as the site for Protein Synthesis. Now what is "S" in 70S/80S? "S" represents the Svedberg unit, a non-SI unit for sedimentation rate. This is the rate at which particles of a given size and shape travel to the bottom of a tube under centrifugal force. This reflects the rate at which a molecule sediments under the centrifugal force of a centrifuge, where sediment refer to the break down into smaller particles. What? What??? It simply represents the size of the subunits that make the Ribosome structure.

As ribosomal particles were first isolated from cell lysates by ultracentrifugation, the ribosomes and their sub-particles were named according to their sedimentation characteristics during centrifugation. The sedimentation properties of a particle depend on its molecular size and geometrical shape. The sedimentation characteristics also depend on the physical properties of the solution through which the particle is sedimenting.”

So now I understand what is the Svedberg unit and I know the guy who discovered it too. Swedish chemist Theodor Svedberg(1884-1971). I wonder if he does facebook hmm.

On Becoming Biochem Badass

Helloooooooo! I don't intend to be hohumm the boring Miss Boringson. But really I like incorporating more learning in my blog. I know you are learning soo much already with few of my how-tos, tips right here and there, how to get the man of your dreams--ack or should I say trap, how to bat an eyelash and all that but I also want to add more knowledge to what my students learn from their dear old Miss given the limited attention span you guyyyzz have in the classroom. So here goes and don't you fall asleep!! A lil bit of Hybdrid class it is. First of, if you have a curiosity about the living world and want to understand what makes it all work;  if you enjoy Chemistry and its application to Biology, then hold out your hands and give huge hugsss to Biochemistry!

Biochemistry is a practical laboratory science that applies the molecular approaches of Chemistry to the vast variety of biological systems and investigates the rapidly changing arena of Chemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology. In a nutshell, it focuses on how molecules act and interact to accomplish highly complex, intra- and intercellular processes. Biochemists, working with colleagues in other disciplines, have developed the new technologies of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering. These have enabled the production of therapeutically important human proteins such as insulin and blood clotting factors by cloning procedures, thus avoiding costly, time-consuming and inefficient isolation of these molecules from biological sources; the identification and possible remedying of genetic problems; and the use of DNA fingerprinting in forensic science.

Inorganic chemistry is the basic standard course of chem. that you can take in high school then in college. It primarily deals with how chemistry is done and reactions between metals and nonmetals. Most of these are water soluble and are extremely useful in learning the math of chemistry.

Organic chemistry is the next level of chemistry. It deals with carbon chemistry. It is often used in industry to make various plastics and complex drugs. It is useful for medical students cuz of the emphasis in use of logic. This is a skill that is very vital in the medical profession. You might not need to remember every reaction once one is to become a doctor but one will definitely need to think scientifically and logically. This class is often used as a benchmark for admittance into med school cuz of the logic processes used.

Biochemistry is the marriage of inorganic, organic and biology. The body is mostly made of carbon, hydrogen, hydrogen and nitrogen. The complex biomolecules are organic in nature but are involved with inorganic salts found in the blood and sap. Most of the driving force for life is found in the movement of inorganic material from one side of a cell membrane to another side of the membrane.

How 'bout a pop quiz? So, what’s the importance of Biochemistry in Medicine and treatment?It pertains to almost everything. Almost every diagnosis and treatment has to be based on evidenced and functioning biology and chemistry. Understanding the functioning of different biochemical processes both intra- and extra-cellularly and their significance and constituents in pathology.

For one of any possible thousands of examples, when one sends off a blood sample for analysis for x, y and z enzymes to assess exempli gratia liver function, one is looking for the concentrations of a set of enzymes. If x enzyme is elevated, one wants to know what this means, which means one must also know why it could be elevated. To know and understand this, one must know the normal function, location et cetera of the enzyme, and thus why it could be elevated and what its effects could be; and as such a physician must be educated in the biochemistry in the human body.

This applies equally in treatment. When prescribing a medicine, one must understand how and why it has an effect, and the mechanism of its action so that one can predict side-effects and also select the best medicine for the specific disorder, in addition to the argument that a physician should always know and understand what he/she is prescribing. How does one understand medicines? Well, one must understand how they are absorbed, metabolised, how the effect a response... Some medicines, for example, are entirely inert in the form that they are found in the pill that you take! They then rely on being activated by biochemical reactions in your body - whether in digestion, or in metabolism by the liver that releases a whole new compound from the medicine that is active. Sometime this even occurs on the second pass through your liver with 2 inert stages, and sometimes it produces an active product on the first pass, which is than metabolised again to produce *another* active product! In short, it's pretty much relevant to everything in medicine.

Okay, Ai Ai. Take a deep breath. Websters defines doormat as a person who is the habitual object of abuse or humiliation by another. Ai Ai, it sounds like you try too hard and do too much. Cut contact with this Jed guy who seems like an asshole of epic proportions and Runnnnnnnnnnnnnn! 

First of all, people can smell low self-esteem, no confidence, dependency and most of all *desperation*. Often opportunists would use this to their advantage. He made you  his mommy. You got him a car and spoiled his bratty chubby no good ass to please him. Now he wants more. Aaand more 'til you have nothing to give. Why do you stand this narcissist guy again?? You said it felt like fairy tale. And indeed it is. Just that you are that wretch witch from Hansel and Gretel, feeding him and his ego 'til they're both fat enough to feed on you. On the other hand, he is the manipulative, abusive version of Hansel or shall I say, Hansel version 666 point 0! I bet Jed Salang is gonna be the next house hold name ala Janine Togonon lang. Na-Jed Salang ka na ba(read:used and beaten like a dead horse lang)?

It's sad, but not that uncommon. Tsk, tsk our choices with men! A woman will always stay on the same rut only if she lets it. When a douchie hinted that a woman is bound to be back to her senses, before she could even leave, he'll promise all the stars, moon, heck, even plasma just to keep her. Avoid him like the plague at this point because he really is going to say anything. Anything! I'm tellin' ya. If he has leached the life out of you, it'll be no wonder how hard it is to go forward. The only way to do something is to actually do it. So by all means, do it! On to the next!

Oh and p.s. honey, never believe that anyone's life is as fabulous as an online profile makes it look! A lot of women are in the same dirty situation like Ai Ai cuz most ladies these days are all trying to be keep up wannabes bragging this, bragging that having the need to flaunt themselves. Do you really need to do that in order to truly find validation or be accepted in your circle? If you can't be friends with your friends if you aren't such the power couple or living rather the luxurious fab life or shall I say the *It life*, then I guess it is your friends that need further re-evaluation. This my friend is not my bitch shot on calling you out over your buddy choices. After all, you wouldn't know if you've got fair-weather friends until the weather turns bad. 

Online profiles whether that's Facebook, Twitter or Bragstagram exist to exaggerate and inflate. People mostly use them only to impress. And to disguise how many boring evenings they spend home with the computer, or going out and wishing someone would talk to them. So, tell me. Is that what you really want to be? An Attention Whore? 

Quit livin' with nothing to show for it--you get what you get when you go for it..

So yesterday, I was waken up by my cutie next door neighbor to witness my morning glow, heh. I was gonna offer him some quickie..err oats. I said *OATS* so quit it. But he looks inebriatedly roasted than me considering tipsy is my middle name, err blogname i mean, shame. That. I had to squee--ooh thanks rather quickly and shut the door. I'm not paranoid. The guy was nice and all, highly helpful during my move-in actually, ooh strong arms if I may say and deaded the beers same night. Can't blame the guy, all the moving had us soo thirsty for ice cold beer, what?! oh well, no matter how nyc a guy is, even if he wakes you up to remind you not to be late for work the next day, you guyyyyzz, morning after is a morning after, shut the door and hit the shower. Get your ass movin' where it's supposed to be. At work!

Aand again so yesterday skipping all that, I went to work not really to work, but technically still work--hey what's happening to me, why am I blabbering? Anyway, goin' back, so we were seated as panel members for new upcoming professors for Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Physics, Pol.Sci blablabla obviously for their job interview and teaching demo, what?! Our enrollees jacked up quite nicely rather than we've expected. Who knows??! We could juz be one of the most uppity universities in the country. hmm, Possible. Shut up. People can dream. Ha! 

Btw, this post is supposed to be about getting what you get when you go for it. What?? I want to inspire ya'al lol. So a burst of inspiration won't hurt every once in a while. For today lemme juz blabber 'bout one of those dear students o'mine who happens to be a "Baseball player" and a *GOLD* medalist at the Southeast Asian Games. Right, you prolly know him, he's got a life-size pretty paper cut-out of himself greeting you as you trail up from the escalator. Yes. It's Ram Casey's pitchin' perfect pose. No, silly, Bobby Parks is the one holding a basketball not a baseball, know the difference,ugh!

Ram Casey earned my respect not because he's a friggin' baseball player, and you pretty much know my kryptonite right? Strong arms, a lil too sportie, juz the right padding. Nooo. I did not mean Casey. Gross. Not with my students, duh. Pshaww!!! *Taking off my romantic glasses, asap. As in Now.*The way you think, ughhh drives me nutsie. Anyway. this kid despite his trainings and whatnot wouldn't dare miss my class. He'll be sitting there. Wearing a cast as part of his uniform. Not to mention a crutch to boot. I can't blame the kid though, what with a cute witty prof as me?? Ah, I'd be rockin' in crutches too if need be just to be in class, ahaha! juz kiddeeeng! got ya again! Sheesh, I one time remembered writing on board and knowing my oscillating hand gestures, surprisingly went a lil off balance trip myself a lil to this poor injured dude, saw him lip synching *Le Eau de ouche!!* if only to save me from further embarrassing myself. This. Wins me over.

So recently I got a text from Casey telling me about his step bro just currently graduating cum laude from U.P. expressing his passion to teach Pol.Sci. He handed me his resume and I forwarded it to admin. I was surprised to see my name on his letter of application, it says endorsed by Miss Jill blabla, hey this kid is kinda smart and surprised me more so once he started opening his mouth. Casey went with him the whole time. I could see him outside standing there. Making follow up as we speak, in a minute,a text. Anyway, I admire this kind of perseverance and his support for his step bro. Hence, a run-down of my usual friday to-do list boring your face now, lol. Hey, it pays to get your lil foot even in the slightest corner of the door is all I'm saying. Now, you'd be seeing Mr. Perez in your Pol.Sci class this June. How 'bout you? Your class or mine? Describe your dream job in detail. What are you most passionate about? Success is relative ya know but to me, it is something that you have to be able to spend your life in your own way--that is the only one success in my book!

Bullying with the Barrettos

It's been said you can't choose your family. This one would obviously not be choosing the same in their next lives. The Barrettos obviously learned from the Kardashians. Public loathing being such a lucrative business. The way they try to one up the other is beyond me. The tacky sulat-serye especially where their sister Gia Barretto-Reyes blew me away not because she writes well but because I was blown by the *hangin*. Wow, how could they even take their family feuds as a perfect opportunity to brag. Milk it baby, for all its worth.

No one knew Joaquin Barretto before this just as no one ever heard of this Gia..um, yea pretty sure, never heard, whatevs! But now, with all the bullying, everyone's known. Whoevs heard of Inday Barretto before this? I only knew Inday Badiday, Inday Garutay and Super Inday! But this?? Again, *nevah heard baby*!!! That obviously changed by now, thanks to you, the unfamous Barrettos are now officially household names. Watch out as they launch their brand sooner at the store near you!

 I'm sorry but how tacky it is at the midst of their family mess should Gia makes bragstagram of how they live in *BIG BEAUUUTIFULLL HOUSES*!! Slept in carpeted, air-conditioned rooms, food galore, put in exclusive schools, members of exclusive country clubs, to each his own yayas, oh and lest ya forget Greta, your yaya is even a *midwife* (read: very mahalia therefore much chica), hmm and so??? Yabang. #poser101. Shall I go on? Driven by chauffeurs. Sent from my iPhone. Sure. Ugh. But since my stat counter likes the traffic ya guys bring on here, oh hey!!--that one I just learned from you guys, thanks! 

As a welcome, I'm typing out Joaquin's open letter, even though it is computerized and he just scribbled an autograph down below #yes he is entitled to one as he is now famous, duhh!! Although according to this Gia, the brother is siding to Gretchen only because he is under her employ *daw* hence making his claim futile. Hmm, interesting! Then again she is siding with Claudine because she paid her medical bills, spoiled everyone else, giving the rest iphones?? Oh, hey nice iphone, that one where you wrote this tasteless letter from. What's that ya say about only credible in as far as one is caught between a rock and a hard place?? Oh wait, that's you. And yes, we get it too. ;p

Aaand I quote Joaquin Barretto:

Did you ever once stop her from doing all that because you loved her and wanted to protect her just like what you are now doing for Claudine? We all know the truth about Claudine’s condition. Gretchen never threatened about having her “padampot.” Whatever for? May I remind you that it was you and dad who had her put in a hospital because you wanted to save her from destroying herself.

Yes, Claudine is going through rough times. Again. And if you truly love her, then you should take concrete steps to save her rather than hitting Gretchen simply because she is standing up to Claudine. You claimed that Gretchen has been calling Claudine’s children names to her face. But how is that ever possible when Gretchen had long stopped taking Claudine’s calls?

Hasn’t Claudine changed her mobile number many time while still owning many prepaid sim cards as well? On the contrary, it was Claudine who repeatedly said she was going to make an exposé. On what? We were clueless until bashing began on Instagram which is why Gretchen came to rescue of Julia. If there is anyone who cared more for her niece, we all know it is Gretchen as she has proven when she chose to protect me and her siblings for a long, long time. This explains why, as you said, we never complained about out childhood.

Please mom, let us put a stop to this before our family totally falls apart while there is still something to save.

"Your claims of financial support for this family have no basis, because dad always managed to provide. For the record, we may not have been so rich but we were never poor. 1. Pinoy Kardashians--Barretto sisters' mom airing all their Dirty Laundry and calling Gretchen amalayer!!

I'm flabberfucked. Never would I ever imagine a mother who is in her right mind bashing her own daughter to bits in national news and television. And leave her picking up her reputation in the trash bin. I mean who does that??! Instead of doing damage control and fixing the prob privyly, the Barretto sisters' mom decided to laser in their family problems out in public. I mean why would anyone release private infos such as who left who and go such great lengths as to exposing her own family members throwing fit and temper tantrums out in the crowd and claim altogether how she raised them all well, humble and human. Are you zerious?? Really??? No offense. But umm, not really. 

These cray crays are biting each other's bum and no one is asking anyone to keep mum--but feck, please!! At least try to have some decency if not much eclat in the process if you're posing to be a classic one. This just goes to show how sporting a *Hermes* can't buy you class. Aaand betchhh please--not to bother with moon shining bright like a diamond, AHA-AHAHA! That's the winner!

Many of your preys will attest to that soon. That is the style that you use when you want to play with other people’s lives!

To correct your lies…

• You claim Claudine said, “She will block Julia’s entry to Star Magic.”  Who did Claudine say it to… you? Or did you just make this up to put Claudine in trouble with Star Magic and make Julia’s big following angry with Claudine? You did that before. Besides, Julia is very much “in” at Star Magic now.
• That Claudine said she is the only Teleserye Princess of ABS-CBN and will remain one ‘till eternity. Hah? Did she tell you that or did you make it up again to block her entry to an ABS-CBN project?

First of all, Claudine was not a Teleserye Princess. She was ABS-CBN Teleserye Queen during her time, just like you were ST Queen during yours.

OH. MY. PANTY. I PASSED THE BOARD EXAMS AGAIN!!

THANK GOD!! I took a shot in the dark and He gave it to me. Not to brag but I didn't read a word or glance at a page, was with the boss all the day and even went out late in preparation for our marketing in La Union, but dayumm!

 I remembered when I took the nursing board exams and all I did was go shopping and feel guilty as my buddy Patrick wakes up at 3 am to start early and nags me by night cuz according to the guy he never saw me opening a damn book. My dear friend R is the worst, as he'd wrestle me to stay put and study. Ho-humm, like you don't know me, yawnsville, I'd rather do other things, fun things and things that chills me. Yes, I'm such an ingrate I know right?? but, with the big butt I've pretty much seen that *this* set up works for me because when I am most relaxed, cool and chill--it is when my mind's at its sharpest, most clear and crystal (read:clear as in zilch, zerooo with the big o) state then it could shift to overdrive as opposed to just merely being such a big ball of mush.

I dunno 'bout you or them or whoevs, but to me, this is how it works. Oh well but that's just me, like I said, I'm such a show-off! Oh and btw, I'm not telling you not studying will give you far more chances of acing or even passing the exam, of course studying would still make you ace it. All I'm saying is, just try to unwind even just for at least a day before, two is okay though or even three. Oh, You're welcome!! I know you won't be such ingrates like me. Hmm, I think I'm not that...Yeah, not so much cuz I'm somehow still aware that I have NU profs to thank for how I turned out today. Aaand one thing I've learned today is having the grace to remind myself, I am enough. As for my mantra: Have less, be more....ummm,,, ohmm, and repeat!
